Why the PSAT/NMSQT is Important

 

When your child takes the PSAT/NMSQT, they open the door to more benefits than you might think.

1. It connects students to more than $235 million in scholarships, including the National Merit® Scholarship Program. If your child opts into our free Student Search Service®, scholarship providers will invite them to apply.

2. It’s excellent practice for the SAT. Both tests measure the same knowledge and skills and ask the same types of questions, so PSAT/NMSQT takers will know what to expect on the SAT.

3. It’s the first step to a free, personalized SAT study plan. Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy® uses your child’s PSAT/NMSQT score to create a customized SAT study plan with sample questions that focus on areas where they need help.

4. It shows student progress on the road to college. The PSAT/NMSQT is part of the SAT Suite of Assessments, a series of tests beginning in eighth grade that shows your child and their teachers whether your child is on track for college.

5. It shows which Advanced Placement Program® (AP) courses your child is ready for. The PSAT/NMSQT Score Report indicates which college-level AP courses your child has the potential to succeed in.

SAT Fee Waivers for Future Assessments

After PSAT and SAT School day, 11th and 12th grade scholars may be eligible to have a fee waiver applied to his\her College Board account by the Assessment Coordinator if the following criteria are met:

The scholar takes the SAT on SAT School Day

Approval for free or reduced lunch is the only form of verification that the Assessment Coordinator can use to determine eligibility for this benefit.

 

Accommodations

College Board is dedicated to ensuring that students with disabilities receive appropriate accommodations on their tests. Each year, the College Board Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office receives over 200,000 requests for accommodations from students with disabilities, of which the vast majority are approved. Accommodations ensure that assessments measure a student’s knowledge, not their disability, and all students have access to the assessments. Accommodations may modify the test timing, setting, or materials. Some examples of accommodations are braille, large-print tests, and extended time. Many others exist. In addition to accommodations for students with disabilities, College Board offers an assortment of supports for English learner (EL) students participating in select assessments. 

To request accommodations for a documented disability on College Board tests, please email Dr. Payton at paytona@fultonschools.org. When emailing him please provide the following information: a) scholar full name, b) Scholar ID number, c) accommodations to be requested , and d) a signed copy of the parental consent form (can be signed and emailed as a picture until we return to school).

If you would like to request accommodations without the school’s involvement, this can be done by using a paper Student Eligibility form (available on www.collegeboard.org/ssd). However, families usually save time and get quicker responses when they collaborate with the school.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register my scholar for the PSAT or SAT?

PSAT - Scholars do not have to register for the PSAT assessment. 

SAT - Senior scholars will need to register for the SAT assessment. Please register for the SAT using the following link: SAT School Day Sign Up

 

Can my scholar bring a calculator?

What time should my scholar arrive?

To ensure testing starts and ends on time, scholars must be seated in their testing room no later than 8:15 A.M. Unfortunately, scholars who arrive late will not be allowed to enter testing rooms.

Starting the PSAT or SAT late will impact our scholars’ ability to complete the assessment and will cause delays in transportation that will have a negative impact on our clusters elementary and middle school evening dismissals.

What is my scholar's testing room number?

Scholars in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade will take the PSAT in their homeroom classes. Seniors taking the SAT will be assigned a testing room. Testing groups will be shared once registration for SAT is closed.
